Loch Broom Skiffies get their own calendar for 2012

Ullapool Coastal Rowing Club are pleased to announce a limited edition Calendar for 2012

Featuring pictures of the four Loch Broom Skiffs from our collection of the last year with vignettes of local Skiffie Celebs  it makes for a highly desirable addition to the well furnished home. We have included local Ullapool events that we are aware of and Skiff events declared so far.  This year, as a special introductory offer, we are able to provide 366 days for the price of 365.

The Calendar is a 13 page, A4 size, spiral bound with wall hanger printed on Silk finish quality paper and supplied with its own envelope, priced at a very reasonable £5. Stuck for that Christmas pressie for Aunt Glad – now you know what she really, really wants.

At the printers now it should be available in a couple of weeks. If you want to be sure of getting your hands on one or more drop a note saying how many to ullacoastrowing@btinternet.com and we will put you on the reserved list. Numbers are going to be limited and UCRC members will have priority. If you want them posted then postage will be at cost.

Ullapool’s Cool More

It has been suggested that Ullapool’s fleet of St Ayles Skiffs are breeding like the proverbial bunnies. The latest addition to the fleet was launched on Friday 6th May. This was the local High School Build put together over the last couple of terms by a team of nine students guided by local boatbuilder Mark Stockl  and Teacher Topher Dawson ( also the builder of our own ‘Ulla’).  After some last-minute burning of the midnight oil the new boat was ready for a lunchtime launch so preceded by four of the School’s Pipers she was escorted from the School to Ullapool’s Wee Pier surrounded by an admiring host of scholars. Arriving on the beach to the acclaim of fellow Skiffies from ‘Ulla’ and ‘Loki’ she was christened with a wee dram and her name, ‘Cùl Mòr’, proclaimed to the world by Headmaster Mr P. Harrison. The first crew from the School then took ‘Cùl Mòr’ out onto Loch Broom for her maiden voyage. Ulla and Loki joined Cùl Mòr on the water to welcome the new arrival. Cùl Mòr is the 18th Skiff to be launched since the prototype took to the water at the end of October 2009. The snaps below show what a super job her team of young builders have done – congratulations.

The build of Cùl Mòr was enabled by the generosity of the Ullapool Harbour  Trustees who donated the kit and materials and Wester Ross Salmon who made workshop space available adjacent to the School since last August.

Seeing the first completed School Build take to the water is an excellent augury for the future of Coastal Rowing in the Lochbroom area. Hopefully the youngsters introduced to the sport via Cùl Mòr will continue with the other groups once they move on from their schooldays.

Ullapool High School Boat turned over

The students from Ullapool High School turned their St Ayles skiff at 15:15ish on Wednesday 19th January. Excellent progress and they should meet their target of completion by Easter.

Over she goes

and gently down

Closer examination reveals a nice clean build with excellent fair lines, she will be a joy to see on the water. The young builders have done a superb job thus far under Mark & Topher’s guidance – congratulations from the Ulla team and we look forward to seeing the back of your heads on the water – though seeing how fit the young builders look there is probably little chance of that!
